Hoodia As An Aid To Weight Loss

Friday, October 31st, 2008

What Is Hoodia?

It is more than 2 years now since hoodia became well known in the public domain. Television programmes on both sides of the Atlantic in 2003/4 saw to that.

If you have not heard of hoodia before, or have but do not really know what it is, let me explain. Hoodia is a cactus-like succulent. I have seen it described as an ugly cactus, but as cacti go, I would say it is about average in the looks department. Not that its looks really matter; you will not be going up to it and giving it a loving hug. You might, however, want to give it a little bite, whether out of curiosity, or because you have heard it can help you lose weight.

I should be a little more precise before I continue. The hoodia plant that has recently been associated with weight loss potential is hoodia gordonii, one of a large group of succulent plants called Asclepiadaceae.

How Can Hoodia Help You Lose Weight?

Hoodia Gordonii grows in the Kalahari desert in Africa, and has done for thousands of years. It clearly thrives in very high temperatures, but it also takes many years to mature. Also living in the same region are the San Tribesmen, or Bushmen. The San are amongst the world’s oldest and most primitive tribes.

The San have been eating hoodia plants for thousands of years. Now, I am sure your vision of an African desert tribe would not be anything like obese Americans or Europeans, for whom hoodia has been mooted as a possible weight loss aid. In fact, you probably imagine quite the opposite, a lithe and slender people struggling to survive on desert morsels. You would be right. How, then, can the San’s inclusion of hoodia in their diet have anything to do with weight loss aids?

The answer is in the reason they have, for all those generations, been eating the hoodia cactus. Their quest for food in the shifting sands of the Kalahari Desert has always meant going on long hunting expeditions. Instant gratification for hunger pangs was not usually on the menu, so with their hunting trips lasting for days, they ate hoodia gordonii because it suppressed those hunger pangs for long periods. No hunger pangs meant no overwhelming desire to eat. That made the whole hunting process that much more bearable.

You are probably now beginning to see how hoodia might come to the aid of the obese and overweight. Those who have trouble controlling their eating urges may have a close ally in Hoodia Gordonii. If a dose of the plant can suppress their desire to eat, to stop them feeling hungry at meal times, then surely they will find it easier to cut back on calorie intake?

That was the theory that sparked scientific studies of Hoodia Gordonii.

Here’s A Valuable Golf Workout Tip

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Here is a golf workout tip that you can afford to ignore at your own peril.

Even as more and more golfers get into golf-exercises and physical training programs, many do not realize how important warming up is.

A valuable golf workout tip to take note of is the fact that it is imperative to warm up before exercises or getting to the course to start taking swings at the golf ball.

What this golf workout tip does for you is to ensure that you do not start straining your muscles when they are cold. There are two things that can happen to anybody who ignores this golf workout tip.

Firstly it is easy to pick up an injury that will hinder your progress in the game for a long time to come. One of the most dreaded injuries in golf is the golfer elbow.

The second inevitable result is that even if you are lucky to escape injury despite not warming up, you will find yourself performing well below par. Your muscles will tend to be still very stiff and even performing a good golf swing will be very difficult indeed.

Yet performing warm exercises and thus fulfilling this golf workout tip need not be so difficult. There are wide ranges of different warm up exercises you can perform that will hardly take up any time.

For example you can walk briskly from your car to the course and if the distant is rather short, you can quickly walk back to your car and then back to the course again. Make sure that you exert as much effort as possible into your brisk walk.

You can then do some brief stretch exercises before you start swinging at the golf ball.

This is a golf workout tip that should help any golfer tremendously in efforts to improve their game.

Winning Races

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

It’s generally accepted knowledge that in order to win a large field poker tournament, you’re going to have to not only have skill, but luck on your side. If anything is a testament to this idea, it would be Jerry Yang’s 2007 Main Event World Series of Poker win, in which clearly he was one of the greenest poker players at the table, and yet still managed to take it down. With a field of several thousand, as is common at the big poker events these days, and often even online, there is inevitably going to end up a pot or two where you will find yourself all in as a coin flip, in which you must get lucky to have your hand hold up.

Tight aggressive players like Phil Hellmuth, Dan Harrington, and Allen Cunningham have said they’ve managed to avoid this phenomenon by making it through the fields without ever putting themselves fully at risk, but obviously this would be an exception rather than a rule (unless you’re as good as those guys at laying down).

With this year’s poker broadcasts, in which pro Chino Rheem made the final table with a seeming tournament-long series of outdraws and lucky hits (in addition to his great reading ability), it’s pretty clear though that you’ve got to be willing to go broke in certain spots to get the big chip stack. Though poker is clearly a game requiring an amount of skill, sometimes the best you can do is go in with the best of it and hope to survive.

Federal Protection against Unfair Debt Collection Practices, Part Two

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Unfair Practices Are Prohibited

Unless the law or your contract with the creditor permits it, a debt collector cannot collect more than the amount you owe on the original debt. He can’t make you pay for collect telephone calls, telegrams, or other hidden charges related to his communication with you.

Postdated checks: A debt collector can’t force you to send a postdated check in order to threaten you or to initiate criminal prosecution. If you do send a postdated check, he can’t deposit it or cash it (or threaten to do so) before the date on the check. In addition, if you send a check that is postdated by more than five days, the debt collector must give you written notice that he will be depositing the check three to ten days before doing so. One executive at a large collection agency suggests consumers who do send postdated checks write in red ink above the date line “VOID UNTIL DATED” as additional protection.

Don’t send a postdated check to a creditor. In many cases, creditors can cash postdated checks without regard to the date. Many issuers receive thousands of payments each week. They are unlikely to catch the fact that a check is postdated, but even if they do, it might be cashed anyway.

Harassment Is Illegal

The following actions are considered harassment or abuse, and collection companies are not allowed to engage in them:

• threatening to use violence or criminal means against you, your family, or property;
• using abusive or obscene language to intimidate or abuse;
• calling you repeatedly on the phone to annoy you;
• calling you and failing to identify themselves;
• publishing a list of “deadbeats.”

Collectors Can’t Use False or Deceptive Collection Methods to Collect a Debt

If a debt collector dressed up as a sheriff and arrived at your door demanding payment (unethical ones might go to those lengths), he would be breaking the law by falsely representing himself. Other false or misleading representations include posing as an attorney; mailing letters that appear to be from an attorney but are not; or using a false name or bogus business name when calling to collect a debt.

It is important to understand that a debt collector can’t threaten legal action that by law he cannot take to collect from you, and he cannot threaten any legal action he doesn’t intend to take. Collectors also can’t threaten you with arrest or falsely accuse you of committing a crime if you don’t pay the debt. They can’t threaten to seize, attach, or sell property, or garnishee your wages, unless they actually intend to do so and have a legal right to do so.

Football 101 – A Girl’s Guide to Football – What’s In It For

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Can I tell you how tired I am of single women complaining about how hard it is to meet a decent man? The problem is not a dearth of quality men. In fact, I know quite a few single gems. The problem exists where the ladies are looking. You aren’t going to find the right man in a sleazy bar or pick-up joint. If you want a man who values integrity, honor, and good sportsmanship, then you have go where the real men are. In the fall, that means your local sports bar.

Football is the all-American game. If you can’t get into the game, you are shunning some of the best guys in town. Here you will find men that truly believe in honor, both on and off the field. Football players aren’t stereotypical big dumb jocks. They have had to work incredibly hard to get where they are, and there are no NFL players who haven’t made a true commitment to the game. The fans are equally committed to the game and their teams. So much for the common complaint that “it’s impossible to find a man who can make a commitment”!

Personally, I’m hooked on the game itself. I love the strategy, the element of surprise, and the emotion (and I’m not terribly opposed to cute butts in tight football pants, either). You may or may not develop your own passion for the game, but you need to garner a basic understanding of how it works if you don’t want to come off like a fool. Guys can spot a fraud miles away, so it’s better to admit your ignorance and ask questions, rather than try to pretend you know the game. Of course, this only works for so long and you need to bone-up on football if you want to hang with the boys. Start with the basics – you need to know what teams are playing, and it really helps to have a favorite. I’m a tried-and-true Raiders fan myself, but they aren’t for the weak-hearted, being the only team in the NFL that has to play against both the opposing team and the selectively-blind referees (personal quibbles aside, of course).
If you don’t have a favorite team in mind, you could simply go with your hometown team. Be it the town you live in now, or the one from which you came. If that doesn’t work for you, then you probably come from Cincinnati or Cleveland, and should pick a random team. I know women who made their selection based on which jersey color looked best on them, which logo they liked best, or which team their despised ex-boyfriend hated the most. However, you make your selection, choose your team, and stay with them through the good times and the bad.

Start reading the sports page. You need to understand what is going on in the football world. At first, very little might make sense, but keep reading and you’ll be surprised at how much you can actually learn. For a high level overview, listen to the sports segment on your local network news. ESPN has a great web site where you can always find the latest stats on all the teams. At the very least, try to know the latest disputed calls, injuries and controversies.

Get a good pal to tutor you in the basics of the game. I recommend choosing a male friend, not boyfriend, who is a patient soul. Also, you are best learning from a taped game, so that he already knows the outcome and won’t mind stopping the tape to explain what just happened. I was totally anti-football until a good friend sat me down with a taped game and a few brews. Thanks to his patience and understanding of the game I’m now a regular Sunday inhabitant of the sports bar. Don’t forget to check among your gal pals; you may have a hidden football fan in your midst. The bonus is not just a great lesson, but also a buddy to join you in your foray into NFL Sundays at the sports bar and football fandom!

I will also be following up with a series on the basics of my favorite game.

Exercise The Right Way – The Seated Row

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Other articles in this series looked at a number of exercises, mainly from the perspective of developing a comprehensive muscle building program. Sometimes we take things for granted, especially when it comes to performing the basic exercises that constitute the core of most bodybuiders’ training regimes.

It is useful, therefore, to describe in detail the processes involved in actually doing these exercises. This will help beginners to start out using the correct techniques before moving on to potentially more dangerous heavy weights. If it also helps more experienced lifters to redress some of the little faults that have almost imperceptibly crept in over the years, all the better.

In this article we’ll take a close look at the seated row using a machine.

MUSCLES TARGETED: latissimus dorsi, teres major, middle trapezius, rhomboids

PREPARATION

Grasp the handles with a closed, pronated grip.

STARTING POSITION

Sit down on the seat facing the chest pad of the machine.
Place the feet on the foot supports.
Sit erect and press the torso against the chest pad.
Extend the elbows fully.
This is the starting position for all repetitions.

BACKWARD MOVEMENT

Pull the handles towards the chest.
Maintain an erect torso position and keep the elbows next to the ribs.
Pull the handles as far back as possible.
Keep all movement smooth.

FORWARD MOVEMENT

Keep the elbows next to the ribs and allow the handles to move back to the starting position.
Keep the torso in the same position.
Repeat or finish set.

Diving in Dolphin Reef

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

If you wish to dive next to dolphins in the Red Sea, Dolphin Reef might be a great choice for you. At Dolphin Reef, divers can dive next to dolphins while they are in their natural habitat. Dolphins who are free to go away from visitors if they wish and are not trained to socialize still stay near and sometimes even showing a very playful spirit.

Dolphin Reef is an ecological site located in Eilat, Israel, and where people and dolphins can meet and interact. Most divers often tell they could hear the dolphins as well as watch them, and sometimes they would even know that dolphins were near by having heard them first. Besides, the environment in which this kind of diving is very beautiful which allows divers to have a really great experience.

One of the main attractions of Dolphin Reef is the fact that dolphins can be visited in their natural environment. This way, divers can view them interacting as a group as well as watch them while in their every day lives and routines. Many dolphins, mostly the young ones, are very curious and friendly and are always willing to approach to divers and swimmers allowing them to have a close encounter.

Another great image which divers can enjoy while diving into Dolphin Reef waters is the one given by dolphins playing and socializing with visitors. Sometimes, the most bold dolphins would approach visitors so much as to allow them touch them and play with them. Besides this, many families of dolphins can be seen in groups, interacting with each other as well as taking care of tasks such as hunting, courting and playing with each other.

Divers who visit Dolphin Reef have the chance to approach dolphins in a different way. These dolphins would not approach to divers or socialize with them due to being trained for it but by wishing to do it. This way, visitors can experience the way in which dolphins like to meet people and interact and this way see how naturally friendly they are without the need of being trained or in a special habitat.
