Where Are The Whitetail Deer?

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Where Did The Deer Go?, Early Season Thoughts..You have worked all spring and summer keeping your feeders filled, building new deer stands or fixing old ones, planting food plots and planning hunting strategies for your first fall hunt. Each time you checked your feeders, food plots or game trails, you were encouraged by new deer sign, fresh tracks, rubs, scrapes and other signs that deer continue to use the area. But, now that archery or early gun season opening day are here, you’re not seeing the deer you expected to see and now you may be asking yourself, “where are the deer?” or, “what did I do wrong?”When this happens, and believe me it happens to all of us, there are several factors to keep in mind. Let’s discuss a few.First, most of us observe deer patterns over the spring and summer and work to draw deer into our areas using any number of tactics including feeders, food plots, salt licks and other game getting techniques. While all of these are good strategies, many of us forget that deer also require a good source of water. By late summer and early fall, water sources can “dry up” leaving few locations for deer and other wildlife to get that life sustaining fluid. If your hunting area that has shown good promise all summer long suddenly stops showing deer activity and deer sighting are down, it may be that the deer are seeking a water source. If you believe this is the case, try to locate a creek bed, small pond or any other water source, no matter how small. Chances are that if you find water, you will find fresh deer signs. Even if a creek appears to be dried up, search up and down the creek bed for any remaining pools of water and look for deer signs. Once you find water and fresh deer sign, consider using a portable deer stand to set up on this location for early season success. Second, regardless of how much corn and feed supplement is around your feeder or how well your food plot has grown, deer, especially mature bucks, prefer the natural forage of the woods and field edges. If your deer feeders and food plots are not located near natural food sources, you may be waiting until natural food sources run low before deer seek your feeders and food plots more actively. If your man made food sources are not drawing in deer and other wildlife, it may be because natural food sources such as acorns or other mast crops have the attention and your stand is not in the path of the natural sources. Your choices are to either wait for the natural food sources to dwindle and for deer to return to your feeders and food plots, or, you the hunter will have to become mobile and hunt the natural food supply using portable stands. With this in mind, you will also want to choose future permanent stand locations that are close to natural food sources when possible. Another good strategy is to place your stands between natural food sources, between food and water sources or between food or water sources and deer bedding areas. Another factor that can reduce deer traffic to your permanent stand locations, feeders and food plots is human traffic. By late summer, it is important that your trips to stand locations be limited and that when you do visit these locations, it is important to reduce human scent left behind. If you are visiting your stands and feeders just to check for fresh deer sign, stop. Trust your stand location choices, fill your feeders and work the food plots early enough that your present is no longer required long before season opens and it is time to hunt. Repeated trips will inevitably leave behind human scent and prevent deer from visiting. Your best chances of a successful deer hunting stand are those less visited by you the hunter. If you do visit your stand locations before your early season hunts, take care to use quality scent elimination products and strategies. It is a good idea to use different routes to and from your hunting areas before during and after hunting season. The point is that you don’t want a human scent trail caused by repeated visits to your stands.Changes to the environment near your hunting area can also play a part in changing the frequency that deer visit a stand location. These factors may include timber logging, field plowing, construction or another hunter creating a new stand location to close to your existing one. For example, we have two deer hunting stands that are close to a paper company property line. About a month before deer season, the paper company decided to cut timber on the adjacent land. Before the timber started falling, these stands always showed good deer sign. When the timber cutting started, even though it was about 100 yards away, the deer traffic to these stands was greatly reduced. In this case, we also learned that the logging would stop just before gun deer season opened. So we chose to leave the stands in place and hunt other stand locations until the deer return to this area. For successful deer hunts, my bet is on the hunter who adjusts to both natural and man made conditions, uses sound judgment when choosing stand locations and makes the necessary adjustments as the environment changes with the season.

Testing

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

As soon as regained consciousness, I jetted down to the drug store and was greeted by an utter plethora of pregnancy tests. I selected the two most expensive, since we don’t want to go cheap on something as important as this. I looked at the tests to see if I could tell which would be the best, but I’m a guy, and I shouldn’t even be here in the first place. I immediate went home and waited sleeplessly for my wife to arrive home from her business trip. Two days went by, like two years. All I wanted to do was tell everybody that I was going to be a dad, but I couldn’t. We just were not sure yet. My wife sometimes goes through phases where she is irregular; it could be a false alarm. I just didn’t want to jump the gun.

When I got the call from her that she had landed at the airport, I considered bringing the pregnancy tests to the airport, but I think that she would want to do that in the privacy of our own home. When we got home the testing began. My wife took the test into the bathroom, and left me waiting anxiously in the bedroom…shaking.

“Why You Must Use The Right Dumbbells For Your Workout”

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

A dumbbell exercise program is effective with the right equipment These days, more so that in decades gone by, dumbbells are growing in popularity in fitness centers and health clubs across the United States.

In addition, they are increasingly being purchased by people who want to include them in their personal gyms at home so they can conduct a dumbbell exercise program in the comfort of their own home when it suits them best.

Rubber encased dumbbells are usually the most popular choice of dumbbells as they offer a myriad of benefits to the user.

While they may be made from high quality cast iron material to give the desired weight effect, they are coated with rubber for added protection, comfort during the dumbell arm workouts and style – the rubber is available in different colors.

Not only are rubber encased dumbbells comfortable to use and safe to use but if you accidentally drop one of them on the floor they will not damage the floor or other equipment because of the rubber exterior. Similarly they will also make a softer thud as opposed to a loud crash with an iron dumbbell.

Iron weights can make a loud continuous clanking sound and can be distracting if you are counting repetitions where as rubber dumbbells allow you to use dumbbells in any way and even drop them on the floor without making much noise.

This is ideal for conducting dumbell arm workouts in the home. The rubber used on rubber encased dumbbells is usually of a very high quality, is odorless, does not crack and is designed to be extremely durable, so the need for maintenance is almost non existent.

On the other hand, chrome dumbbells will also be a welcome addition to any personal fitness room. These dumbbells and the dumbbell weights are usually polished with high grade chrome to give optimum functionality.

Chrome adjustable dumbbells are usually sold in 5 pound increments so you can build and decrease your dumbbell weights as your fitness program changes. These adjustable dumbbells give you the flexibility to quickly and easily perform a variety of exercises according to what you are doing with your strength exercises.

Dumbbells – whether they are rubber encased or chrome adjustable dumbbells -can be purchased easily and usually cheaply from stores or catalogs selling exercise equipment online.

Online prices are generally lower than those of the traditional stores and the dumbbells can be sent directly to your home -sometimes even with free shipping and insurance. =========================================================== Find out why dumbbells are the best type of free weight exercises. The Black Dot Bullseye Difference

Friday, November 21st, 2008

The Black Dot Bullseye Shaft is the result of many years of research and development to bring to the player the optimum conditions necessary to play the extremely accuracy-demanding game of Billiards.

The goal of the Black Dot Bullseye Shaft is to deliver to you the player something that has never been done before by any cue makers (custom or production) – any time or anywhere including Meucci Originals. That goal is to provide multiple shafts that play precisely the same, while reducing cue ball deflection and increasing power to an unprecedented level.

Why is that important to you as the player? Decreased cue ball deflection, and increased power should be obvious. As you might know, your mind adjusts to the very fine variations in the shaft you choose to play with over a fairly short period of time. But heaven help you if the tip comes off that special shaft in the MIDDLE of intense competition.

As all top players know, one shaft fits their brain (sight picture) better than the other, unused shaft in their case. If you don’t believe that, open any top player’s case and the second shaft will be virtually unused and the player might tell you that one of the shafts (the dirty shaft) happens to be his favorite; meanwhile, the other shaft remains clean and fairly unused. There is a very good reason for this phenomenon and it has to do with the differences in natural wood, and the power of the human mind.

Single-piece, maple shafts vary considerably from one to the next because of the grain structure created by the location that the shaft is cut from within the particular tree. Fast growth wood – near the center of the log – is softer, and more flexible, where later growth rings nearer the outside of a large tree, are closer together and create a much stiffer shaft. That variation is as much as more than double the stiffness from one side of the spectrum of the tree to the other. When you take into consideration the differences in the wood grain and the time it takes for the human mind to readjust to the fine nuances of “sight picture,” this is more than a player should have to deal with when attempting to change from one shaft to the other. For these reasons, we have decided to take random chance out of the picture.

When we released generation 1 of our performance shafts, the red dot shaft, it was a quantum leap in performance in regards to power and reduction of deflection. However, the flaw in the red dot that has now been cured by generation 2, the black dot bullseye, is the fact that it was made from one solid piece of maple.

The Black Dot Bullseye Shaft is a composite of 35 single, hard-rock maple veneer pieces flat-laminated uni-directionally with extreme heat and pressure. Through multiple turnings, and stress-relieving processes the desired, optimal result is achieved by the perfect blend of the stiffness of the glue, the pressure used to laminate, and the consistency of thin, maple veneer. The variations between one Black Dot Bullseye Shaft (tapered the same) and another is no more than one and a half percent. This amount of variation would change the flight of the object ball on a Black Dot Bullseye Shaft with a Meucci Power Piston butt as little as ten one-thousandths of an inch, when shooting a spot-to-spot shot into the corner pocket. Comparatively the variations between two one-piece maple shafts under the same conditions, would cause the object ball to vary by up to 100 times greater variation than the black dot bullseye.

Now let’s consider segmented shafts. The problem with the pie segmented shafts, when considering only one flaw, variations in stiffness, is that the segmented shaft is also under the influence of grain structure of the original wood used. All six, eight, ten, or twelve segments of the shaft coming from the same piece of wood, and the same location of the log it was hewn from brings us back to the same problem we addressed before with the single-piece shafts: variations in stiffness from one shaft to the next.

The benefits that we have discussed are only available in the Meucci Blackdot Bullseye shafts. There are other flat-laminated veneer shafts that have attempted to duplicate the performance of the Meucci Blackdot Bullseye, but tip, ferrule, and taper design have caused a deviation from the perfection that we have brought to fruition through many years of research and development.

Like never before, you now can have a perfect, matched set of shafts whether it be two, three, four or more, to increase the consistency and accuracy of your game.

Golf and Fishing what have they in common?

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Golf and fishing could not be more different but they both have something in common and that being is, how they give enjoyment and pleasure to all who participate in the sport. For most people they are hobbies and for others it is how they make their living. You can earn big money as a professional golfer. May I suggest if you do not play golf and think the sport is not for you then think again? The proof of the pudding is in the eating.

If it is the Rupert bear yellow checked pants, red jumper and blue cap that deters you from venturing onto the green then do not let this put you off. This is a familiar trade mark of most players who are comfortable with the Disney look. You wear what you are comfortable with.

Golf has to be one of the most laid back relaxing and enjoyable sports out there; if a sport can excite and give pleasure throughout a whole game then need I say anymore.

Learning to play is a great experience and can be great fun; mistakes will be made and no doubt this will leave your fellow golf partners doubled over with laughter. It will be easier for you to understand why this game is one of the world’s most popular sports by joining in.

Fishing,

If you intend to take up angling in the sea make sure you are in a boat, as you do not want to end up bait for most big fish.

Another peaceful sport is fishing. Imagine yourself sitting on the river bank with your fishing basket at your side fully packed with sandwiches and a flask of piping hot coffee. And to make the day even more special are the sedate and scenic surroundings accompanied of course by a flowing river.

The beauty of fishing is the feeling it gives as i.e. not having a care in the world. A very rewarding sport when the fish start to bite. Fishing can become an addictive sport or hobby where you never want to go home, what is so wrong in that I ask unless of course you have a wife and kids.

How to cast a baited rod like a professional is not as hard as you may think, the right guidance tips and advice from an experienced person in this field will prove to be the best move you could make in acquiring these skills for your self.

Kevin Brovold gave me the inspiration that was needed to fulfill my dream of becoming a pro with his Golf Magic tips on the sport.

Choosing which sport to take up may cause problems. Problem solved do both.

A Guide to College Baseball Bats

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

In the mid 1850s, when baseball was in its infancy, players made their own bats. They experimented with flat bats, round bats, and heavy bats. They ultimately discovered that the barrel shaped bat was the most effective. Today, college baseball bats have taken this technology to a new, powerful level upon the introduction of aluminum bats in the mid 1970s. Too many wooden bats were being broken, so due to budget crunches suffered by many college athletic programs, collegiate baseball made the switch from wood to aluminum bats. This sparked a debate that rages today.

Many purists want to do away with the high tech aluminum/alloy bats and return to the days where they claim hitters had to be much better in order to rack up those high batting averages. On the other hand, a many people believe that the aluminum college baseball bats elevate the game to an exciting level, with more home runs and a faster pace. Colleges still prefer the aluminum bats due to their durability, their cost effectiveness, and their lightweight swinging power.

College players can pay as little as $50 for a used bat or up to several hundreds of dollars for ultra-light, specialized alloy bats. College players usually have a good feel for what kind of bat they need. They should consider personal height in relation to the length of the bat, and of course barrel size and weight. One advantage of current college baseball bats is that the batter can capitalize on the inside edge of the strike zone. So when a pitcher is trying to jam the batter, a base hit can be ripped out with a good aluminum bat.

College baseball bats are available online, in sporting goods stores, and at used equipment outlets. Always ask the coach for guidance, and test bats for free at a batting cage so that you may more effectively judge the bat’s power and fit before making your selection.

Learn how to do a proper golf ball comparison

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

If peak performance is what you are after then you need to learn how to do a proper golf ball comparison. Just like choosing the right golf clubs, picking the correct ball for you is just a matter of matching the different types of balls with your swing and how you play golf. Golf balls are all the same, aren’t they? They may be small, but they are one of the most engineered pieces of golfing equipment.

Have you ever taken a really close look at a golf ball? They have different feels, different densities and different spins esulting in a different action, depending on how you play the game. To get the best out of your game and your golf ball, you need to match each section of the golf ball with your level of skill and style,

First off, you need to chose the correct golf ball compression. The compression is the measurement of how tightly wound the ball is. Depending on your swing speed, depends on how the compression comes into play. If you’re swing speed is quite slow, then you will want a lower compression. Therefore, the faster the speed, the higher the golf ball compression that you will need.

In total, the compression ratings are broken down into three seperate groups.

The first group is the 80 compression golf balls. They tend to be the softest and produce what essentially results in a sling shot effect when they are hit. They fly farther after being hit but they are much hard to control and hit accurately. They are the most popular type of golf ball amongst women, senior and junior players for their distance alone.

The next group is the 90 compression rating golf balls. Due to their middle of the road standing, soft enough to provide good distance on a slower swing but hard enough to provide a good degree of control, these are a good match for most male players in a golf ball comparison. They also prove to be a great choice for the more advanced female players.

The final group is the 100 compression rating golf balls. Fast swing speeds are needed for top performance due to these being the hardest balls. These type of balls are most popular amongest the low handicap and scratch players due to the faster swing speeds and the higher level of control.

Of course the only real way for you to know which is the best fit golf ball compression for your game is to do your own golf ball comparison. So, why not take a few of each of the golf ball compressions out to the driving range and find out which ones work best for you.

Paintball-One of the Safest sports today!

Monday, November 17th, 2008

Paintball One Of The Safest Sports Out There Today. While membership in the “Extreme Sports” category implies a whiff of danger, only Paintball is handicapped by a huge injury taboo–one that exists in the public mind, but not in the statistics. The industry has long maintained that the rare (but highly publicized) eye injury almost always occurs in an unsupervised, unprotected, often illegal setting; and that Paintball is a very safe activity–a claim substantiated by the current research, as the sport reflected only 0.2 injuries per 1,000 exposures, the lowest injury rate of any Extreme Sport. Put another way, the average player will suffer a Paintball injury about once every 500 years. Did you know more injuries are reported from basketball and baseball than from paintball? Not many people know that. Ever since paintball began back in the mid 80s, safety was always the number one concern. We’ve always worn eye protection, although to begin with, it consisted of safety glasses and ski masks . Nowadays, we wear masks specifically made for the sport and tested to high standards. Every manufactured paintball mask must be made to withstand a paintball traveling at least 300 feet per second (fps) or about 201 miles per hour. Paintball has regulated itself. We have developed rules and guidelines, and all paintball facilities in the world adhere to them strictly. We have never had to be regulated by any agency other than ourselves. That is a credit to the quality individuals and corporations that have made paintball what it is today. Most of the problems occur when people purchase paintball equipment and play in their backyards or an empty lot. This is dangerous. If you want to ensure everyone’s safety with paintball, a regulated paintball field is recommended. The only time paintball gets media coverage is when something goes wrong. There is the rare isolated incidents and most can be avoided by following the safety rules. On regulated fields, Paintball players must keep their masks on at all times, even at the chronograph. Make sure your marker is shooting under the legal fps limit usually under 300. If you ever have a problem with your tank, never try to fix it yourself. Take it to the field operator or your local pro-shop. Make sure your equipment is in good shape and well maintained. The paint in paintball is made of a washable substance and are actually editable!!. They are made of gelatin and food coloring. . There are paintball-eating contests all the time at tournaments and events. I don’t recommend it, cause they taste gross but they happen all the time. Paintball is one of the safest outdoor sports available. The paintballs do not cause injury, but falling down from tripping might. Personally, I have never seen anyone get hurt who was following all of the safety precautions. Paintball is not just aimlessly running around with a marker and shooting your opponents. Oh no. This sport takes practice, determination, strategy, and a lot of money. It can also be a LOT of fun!!!

Golf Specific Fitness Is Underrated

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Golf specific fitness is mainstream on tour! There is no way around it! To play your best, you’ve got to be in better golf shape! Golf is physical…and requires both dynamic strength and flexibility.

Gone are the days of the 19th hole! That’s if you want to be top dog in your foursome. Instead of going to the 19th hole after your round, why not do some cool down stretches so you’re ready for the next round?

I’m not saying you have to be a fanatic, but just realize there is a definite “physical component” to optimal golf performance. The demand on the body to swing a club at upwards of 100 mph and stay in your golf posture is huge.

A golf specific fitness program incorporating golf exercise and golf stretching will maximize your body’s ability to produce awesome power where it counts…at impact!

What is golf specific fitness?

I can tell you it’s not going to a gym and doing a seated chest press. It’s not spending 2 hours everyday beating yourself up. It’s not lifting heavy weights. But it does require a commitment. Just like anything else worth achieving.

That phrase, “if it were easy, everybody would be doing it” is so true.

With over 70 million baby boomers who want to enjoy life, be healthier and a big majority of them playing golf…golf specific fitness “kills two birds with one stone”. A fitter, stronger body and an awesome golf game. What better way to spend your quality years?

Golf specific fitness incorporates dynamic strength and flexibility; muscular endurance directly related to your golf swing; balance; coordination: stability; and a much improve sequence of timing to produce maximum power through the impact zone.

Golf specific fitness does not require heavy weights, but improving your golf swing strength is always a goal. Being stronger in your golf swing takes a unique approach that is not accomplished with a general fitness program.

The main focus should be on “rotational” strength and flexibility!

The golf swing is a high-speed rotational movement. The goal for maximum distance is to create a higher level of torque and be able to store and unleash it at the right moment in time.

This requires a major emphasis on core rotational movements with resistance. This is the ONLY way to improve your backswing AND follow through range of motion and power. These movements should be done sitting on a stability ball; standing erect; getting in your golf posture; and even on one leg.

It kills me to see a trainer do a bicep curl with a golf client. This will NOT help your golf swing. Just take a look at the position your wrist is in doing a standard bicep curl. It’s turned out very awkwardly (and uncomfortably).

Do you grip a golf club like this? Then why would you do this exercise? If you’re a golfer, you wouldn’t!

How about a seated chest press on a machine?

I’ve seen golfers in the gym doing this one.

Golf is “on your feet”, using every major muscle group in your body in a certain sequence of motion. How would a “seated” chest press on a “controlled” machine help your golf swing?

It wouldn’t!

Golf specific fitness will get your body moving powerfully through your golf swing for 18 holes. Your swing will become more consistent. You will add a ton of yards to all your clubs…especially your driver. And your incident of injury will plummet.

Isn’t this reason enough to get start on a program of golf specific fitness?
