Investment into Research and Development of LTE Advanced by EU

The European Union has always led the world in mobile devices and mobile technology, with GSM being its major achievement in the past few decades. The joint research programme of the European Union along with EU funding for GSM research saw the successful adoption of GSM technology by service providers and consumers alike.

Now the European Union has announced that it will provide 18 million euro or almost 16 million pound as funds for research and development into the new LTE Advanced, the next level in LTE technology. This fund is proposed to be released sometime in the first week of January next year.

Viviane Reding, Telecoms Commissioner for the EU, while talking about the recent fund announcement, stated that this would surely help develop this new technology in the same manner as it happened with GSM. She added that Europe definitely has the expertise for research and development required to introduce new technologies in the global market.

LTE, or Long Term Evolution, is claimed to be the next generation in mobile broadband technology and is said to be almost tens of times faster in speeds than all present connections. Advantages of LTE primarily include availability of faster and hi-speed connections at really low costs and enhancements of the capabilities of networks. Besides, easy downloads of TV and video streams are possible in mobile broadband due to really high speeds of almost one gigabit per second. Optimum use of bandwidth, enhanced signals to ensure better coverage, and extension of broadband to no-coverage zones are its other advantages.
