IT Managers Reveal Tough Server Management Challenges of Switching to the Cloud
IT decision makers consider on-site server management and maintenance as their biggest challenge. According to a survey conducted by Rackspace Hosting, more than half of the respondent businesses claimed that they would rather not buy another server ever. The survey was conducted in conjunction with the No More Servers campaign. The said campaign was designed to raise awareness on the subject of managed hosting, email hosting and cloud computing. The survey found that 31 percent of the time of British IT companies is allocated for server management. Having to stay available round the clock is a hassle for 36 percent of the respondents, 35 percent say it’s hardware and maintenance concerns while the after hour calls and other concerns make up 34 percent of the headaches of these industries.Rackspace EMEA Marketing Director Fabio Torlini says that the findings of the survey can be easily summarized. IT people are spending more time fixing and overseeing to operations rather than working on how they can improve the technologies strategically. He said that one of the findings from the survey state that 45% of the respondents said that they think they bought more servers than is really necessary. Torlini adds that companies are spending too much or too little on servers. This is mainly because they don’t really know how much traffic they are getting. They don’t foresee when the spikes in traffic could come because they are spending most of their time making sure that their facilities are running properly. He said that it’s important to plan for the worst case scenario as far as traffic is concerned. A company has to work with infrastructure that is built around optimum levels.
